The entertainment world witnesses a watershed moment as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirms its partnership with YouTube for exclusive Oscar broadcasting rights. Beginning in 2029 and extending through 2033, this agreement marks the end of traditional network television’s long-standing relationship with Hollywood’s premier awards ceremony, embracing digital streaming as the future of live entertainment broadcasting.

This arrangement encompasses extensive content beyond the primary awards presentation. YouTube subscribers will experience comprehensive red carpet arrivals, unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, exclusive Governors Ball footage, and year-round Academy programming including the Governors Awards, nomination announcements, nominees Luncheon, Student Academy Awards, member interviews, filmmaker conversations, educational content, and podcasts. This expanded programming strategy transforms occasional event viewing into sustained year-round engagement.

The Academy’s international evolution informed this strategic decision. With voting membership now including 21% international participants from outside the United States, leadership recognized that global digital distribution better serves their constituency than traditional American network broadcasting. CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor emphasized that worldwide accessibility advances both member interests and the broader filmmaking community’s needs in an increasingly connected global industry.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan positioned the partnership as cultural stewardship meeting technological innovation. He committed to preserving the Oscars’ distinguished legacy while leveraging digital capabilities to cultivate new audiences and inspire future creative generations. This vision recognizes that enduring cultural institutions must adapt their distribution methods to maintain relevance and accessibility amid rapidly evolving media consumption patterns.

The announcement reflects broader entertainment industry transformation toward streaming dominance. YouTube maintained its position as America’s most-watched streaming platform throughout the current year, achieving record viewership shares while traditional networks struggle competitively. The platform’s successful September live NFL broadcast attracted over 17 million viewers, demonstrating sophisticated live event production capabilities. Disney’s ABC network, broadcasting Oscars for over fifty years, will host three final ceremonies through 2028 before the historic transition. Industry observers expect considerable reaction from Academy members as Hollywood’s biggest night embraces digital-first distribution.
