The standoff between Russia and the West has entered a dangerously escalated phase following Vladimir Putin’s threat to attack any foreign troops in Ukraine. His declaration that such forces would be “legitimate targets” has pushed the two sides closer to the brink of a direct military confrontation.

This new level of tension was sparked by a French-led proposal, backed by 26 nations, to deploy a multinational force to guarantee Ukraine’s security after the war. What was intended as a protective measure has now been framed by the Kremlin as a potential trigger for a wider conflict.

Putin’s threat is a strategic move to exploit the West’s fear of an all-out war. It has highlighted the deep divisions within the alliance, with major powers like Germany firmly ruling out the deployment of their troops. This has undermined the initiative and exposed a lack of common resolve.

The escalation in rhetoric is a direct consequence of the failure of diplomacy. With no peace talks on the horizon, military posturing has become the primary tool of statecraft, creating a volatile and unpredictable situation with global implications.
