President Donald Trump’s Memorial Day address at Arlington National Cemetery blended traditional tributes to fallen service members with unexpected campaign-style remarks and personal boasting. The ceremony, which included a wreath-laying alongside Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, is typically a solemn, apolitical occasion.

Trump’s prepared remarks honored military sacrifice appropriately, acknowledging that the valor of fallen soldiers “gave us the freest, greatest and most noble republic ever to exist.” However, he quickly pivoted to political commentary, suggesting he was currently repairing the nation after “a hard four years” and making critical references to immigration policies during the previous administration.

The president drew attention to specific examples of military sacrifice, including airmen lost over Vietnam and a soldier killed by a suicide bombing in Iraq, with family members present. Yet he also made several self-referential comments, including his claim that the upcoming Army’s 250th anniversary celebration would overshadow international sporting events scheduled during his term, which he attributed to divine timing.
