Weeks of intense speculation and global buzz came to an end on Friday as the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced its choice for the 2025 Peace Prize. The winner is not the much-discussed President Donald Trump, but the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

The swirl of discussion around Trump had reached a fever pitch, fueled by his own public lobbying and his recent involvement in a Gaza ceasefire plan. Many news outlets had positioned him as a top contender, making the final announcement a significant surprise.

The committee, however, looked past the headlines and chose to honor Machado for her “tireless work” in the long and arduous struggle for democracy in Venezuela. She was praised for uniting the opposition and championing the cause of free elections.

Reacting to the end of the speculation, the White House issued a statement that sought to have the final word, asserting Trump’s ongoing commitment to peace. “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives,” the message declared.

Now that the speculation is over, the world is left to consider the committee’s definitive choice. The decision to honor Machado over Trump is a clear statement of values, prioritizing long-term, principled activism over short-term, high-profile diplomacy.
