A “high-noon” moment is approaching for President Donald Trump’s Ukraine policy, as his self-imposed two-week deadline for a major decision draws near. The president will soon have to choose between a dramatic confrontation with Russia or a strategic withdrawal from the conflict.

The choice, as Trump has framed it, is between “massive sanctions” and “doing nothing.” This high-stakes decision is designed to force movement from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom Trump is pushing to meet for direct talks.

As the showdown approaches, Putin has made a conciliatory gesture towards Trump, hailing him as a “light at the end of the tunnel” for the historically poor relations between their countries. This suggests Moscow would prefer a negotiated settlement to an economic war.

Putin also made it clear, however, that Russia’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. His speech in Sarov emphasized that Russia’s very existence depends on this principle. This sets the stage for a tense finale to Trump’s fortnight of deadline diplomacy.
