President Trump’s administration has contradicted his two-week timeline for a summit with Vladimir Putin. An official stated Tuesday that “no plans” exist for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
Trump had announced the Budapest summit last week on social media after a “progress” call with Putin.
The Kremlin also backed away from Trump’s timeline, with a spokesperson stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.
The president’s announcement did spur a “productive” call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
However, the anonymous administration official said that after this call, a separate in-person meeting between the diplomats was deemed “not necessary,” halting the preparations.
