Vietnamese President To Lam has commenced official visits to the European Union and Belgium, arriving in Brussels with his delegation on Wednesday. The visits, invited by European Council President António Costa and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, aim to bolster diplomatic ties and expand economic cooperation between Vietnam and its European counterparts.
The relationship between Vietnam and the EU has been evolving since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1990. Over the years, cooperation has broadened to include trade, economic development, security, and sustainable growth. In 2026, both parties elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, paving the way for collaboration in energy, innovation, green transition, and regional security.
Vietnam and Belgium’s diplomatic relationship dates back to 1973, with both nations engaging in trade, agriculture, education, science and technology, and developmental programs. They also collaborate on international issues through platforms such as the United Nations and ASEAN-EU frameworks.
President To Lam’s visits are anticipated to reinforce political connections and deepen economic partnerships, translating existing agreements into practical initiatives. These efforts reflect Vietnam’s broader strategy to strengthen international relations and enhance engagement with European partners.
