The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation from Hungary in the European Parliament has recently voiced concerns over what they perceive as a lack of response from the European Commission regarding constitutional and political shifts in Hungary. These shifts, according to the delegation, pose a threat to the nation’s democratic framework.
During a meeting that brought together the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to address several contentious issues. Among these were recent constitutional amendments, new restrictions on political competition, alterations affecting parliamentary mandates, and questions surrounding the independence of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers highlighted that, in the past, the Commission had expressed concerns over the rule of law in Hungary, which led to the withholding of EU funds. Despite these actions, they argue that the Commission has remained silent on the current developments. The MEPs questioned whether the recent constitutional changes align with European democratic norms and standards.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation emphasized the importance of applying democratic principles uniformly across all European Union member states. Yet, during the meeting, representatives from the European Commission did not provide comprehensive answers to the pointed questions posed by the Hungarian delegation.
