Scotland’s eagerly anticipated return to the FIFA World Cup has been clouded by a contentious disagreement with Norway, stemming from the cancellation of a friendly training match that was scheduled to take place in North Carolina. The match, intended to provide playing time for squad members before the tournament, was canceled by Scotland due to a series of injuries plaguing their team. This decision followed a significant blow with midfielder Billy Gilmour sustaining an injury that ruled him out of the World Cup, alongside other minor fitness issues affecting several players.

The cancellation did not sit well with Norway, whose head coach, Ståle Solbakken, openly criticized the decision and expressed discontent over the lack of advance notice. Norwegian officials underscored the extensive planning that had gone into organizing the match and labeled the abrupt cancellation as a source of frustration.

In defense of their actions, Scotland emphasized the necessity of prioritizing player health and safety ahead of the World Cup, with midfielder John McGinn noting that safeguarding key players was paramount. McGinn suggested that any nation, faced with similar circumstances, would likely make the same decision to protect its athletes.

The Scottish Football Association provided further clarification, explaining that the arrangement of the match was handled by team administrators rather than the head coaches. They assured that Norway was informed immediately upon making the decision to cancel and expressed surprise that details of what was supposed to be a behind-closed-doors fixture were made public.

As both teams continue their preparations for the upcoming tournament, Scotland remains focused on managing several injury concerns, while Norway had hoped the match would offer valuable preparation time for their players needing game minutes before competitive play begins.
