In a thrilling encounter on Tuesday, Madrid edged out Elche 3-2, with substitute Carlos Espi scoring a decisive goal in stoppage time.
Though Real Madrid initially appeared dominant as they secured a two-goal advantage, Elche’s spirited comeback in the second half set the stage for a tense finish. Arda Guler’s free-kick, which ricocheted off the post and the Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro, gave Madrid an early lead. This was followed by Kylian Mbappe capitalizing on a cross from Yan Diomande to extend the lead.
Elche responded after halftime, reducing the deficit through Abiel Osorio’s header from Lucas Cepeda’s cross. The momentum continued with Nino’s 83rd-minute equalizer, leveling the playing field and intensifying the match. In response, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho made strategic substitutions, introducing Carlos Espi and Endrick as the team pushed for a late winner.
Espi, who joined Madrid from Levante this summer, has quickly become a valuable asset, despite not yet starting a match. His goal in the 91st minute, assisted by Mbappe, secured the win for Madrid, marking Espi’s second crucial goal of the season. Previously, he had also netted a late winner against Espanyol in the season opener.
With this victory, Real Madrid has now claimed five wins from six league matches, putting them neck and neck with defending champions Barcelona, who are set to play Racing Santander next. In other La Liga action, Valencia celebrated their first win of the season by defeating Alaves 1-0, while Rayo Vallecano overcame Espanyol 2-1.
