Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic venture, The Odyssey, has set a new benchmark by achieving the highest opening weekend box-office earnings per capita in Ireland. This latest offering from the acclaimed director amassed €954,000 in the Republic of Ireland and an additional €69,000 in Northern Ireland upon its debut last Friday. The film’s global earnings reached an impressive $264 million during its first weekend, marking the most successful box-office debut in Nolan’s career to date.
The Odyssey, featuring a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, is a cinematic adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem by Homer. It chronicles the tumultuous and lengthy voyage of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he endeavors to return home following the conclusion of the Trojan War. The film has outperformed Nolan’s previous 2023 release, Oppenheimer, and has delivered the director’s most robust opening since the release of The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
Launched across 73 international markets, The Odyssey premiered in more than 12,800 venues and on 26,000 screens worldwide, with 440 of these being IMAX screens. Notably, it is the first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a testament to Nolan’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of cinematic technology and storytelling.
Critics have widely praised The Odyssey, highlighting both its visual and narrative strengths. The ensemble cast, which also includes notable talents such as Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron, has been lauded for their performances, contributing to the film’s critical and commercial success.
