Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as the busiest airport in Europe for the month of July. While Heathrow served 7.86 million travelers, the Turkish hub managed to accommodate 8.15 million passengers during the same period. This shift marks a notable change in rankings, as Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in traffic compared to the previous year, whereas Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers.
The decrease in Heathrow’s figures has been partly attributed to disruptions related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to move forward with Heathrow’s long-debated expansion plans. Currently operating near full capacity with its two runways, the airport’s proposed £33 billion project aims to add a third runway, potentially boosting its annual capacity to about 150 million passengers.
Heathrow Airport officials argue that the latest statistics underscore the urgent need to expand its infrastructure to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism. In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and round-the-clock operations. It already has three runways and is planning to introduce a fourth runway by the end of 2026.
Elsewhere in the UK, other airports have experienced significant growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July on record, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers respectively. This indicates a broader trend of increasing air travel demand, highlighting the importance of infrastructure development to accommodate future growth.
