Meta’s AI Investments Cause 91% Drop in Free Cash Flow

Meta Platforms has reported a significant decline in its free cash flow for the second quarter, marking a 91% drop compared to the same period last year. The company recorded a free cash flow of $784 million for the quarter ending June 30, a steep fall from the $8.55 billion reported in the previous year. This decline has been attributed to the company’s substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, which also led to a decrease in Meta’s share value during after-hours trading.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta is channeling considerable resources into enhancing computing capabilities for AI model training, expanding its core operations, developing personal AI assistants, and creating AI services tailored for enterprise customers. Despite the heavy initial expenses, Zuckerberg is confident that these investments will establish AI as a major revenue source for Meta in the long run. The company’s earnings per share were reported at $6.18, falling short of the $7.22 anticipated by analysts, though there was a 28% increase in quarterly revenue to $60.8 billion, driven by strong performance in its advertising sector.

Looking ahead, Meta has projected its capital expenditures to range between $130 billion and $145 billion by 2026, adjusting the lower range of its previous estimates. This adjustment reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its AI infrastructure and data center capabilities. Despite these financial commitments, Meta’s applications continue to witness growth in user engagement, with daily active users rising to 3.6 billion.

In addition to financial challenges, Meta is also navigating legal hurdles, including lawsuits concerning youth safety on its social media platforms. The company has acknowledged that these legal battles, along with restructuring costs, have impacted its operating income for the quarter. Nevertheless, Meta remains focused on its strategic investments in AI and technological advancements as it seeks to solidify its position in the industry.
