US-Iran Tensions Impact Regional Markets Amid Escalating Military Strikes

The situation between the United States and Iran has escalated into a vigorous military confrontation that has persisted for six days, sparking fears of a broader regional conflict and jeopardizing a newly established interim peace agreement. The U.S. has conducted recent strikes near Tehran and targeted a vessel close to Iran’s Kharg Island, alleging that the ship ignored multiple warnings. Iranian sources have reported numerous casualties from these incidents and have denounced the U.S. actions.

In retaliation, Iran has launched missiles and drones targeting Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, nations that host American military bases. Meanwhile, Iraqi officials have intercepted a drone attack near Erbil, and in a separate incident, oil loading operations in Basra were temporarily halted after a drone hit a tanker, although it caused no major damage.

The situation has further intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial corridor for global energy transportation. Iran has announced the closure of this vital waterway and threatened to broaden its military activities should the U.S. attack further Iranian sites. Iranian-backed factions in the area have been put on high alert, raising alarms about potential disruptions to international shipping routes.

This military escalation is already impacting global energy markets, with oil prices rising to approximately $85 per barrel as the flow of ships through the Strait of Hormuz diminishes. In light of the volatile security environment, several nations, including India, have advised their merchant fleets and sailors to avoid the area until the situation stabilizes.

Despite the ongoing conflict, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed that Washington is still willing to pursue a negotiated resolution. However, Iranian authorities have stood firm, stating they will not enter negotiations under the threat of military force. Diplomatic endeavors by regional mediators have yet to yield any reduction in the heightened tensions.
